An AVTA Certification Examination candidate must:

be a veterinary technician graduate of an AVMA approved veterinary technician program and/or posses a current valid credential to practice in a state or province.

have a minimum of 6000 hours (3 years) of work experience after graduation / credentialing, with 75% (4500 hrs.) of that experience spent providing anesthesia care according to the
AVTA Definition of Anesthesia.

provide a case log of at least 50 cases anesthetized between January and December of the year of submission of the application.

provide four detailed case reports from the patients listed in the case log.

complete the skills on the Advanced Veterinary Anesthesia Skills Form.

submit two letters of recommendation.

attend at least 40 hours of Continuing Education in the 5 years preceding application. See Continuing Education Requirements.

submit a signed waiver form.
